What is the difference between a CONSERVATOR and a RESTORER.
Many people are confused about the difference between an art conservator and a restorer. To the layperson there is seemingly no difference and the terms are used interchangeably. However, this is very much not the case and the gulf between "restoration" and "conservation" is rapidly widening. Art conservators are generally academically trained to at least the level of a Master's degree (M.A.C. – Master’s of Art Conservation – see FAQ on Where do I get conservation training?). They have training in the scientific, art historical and artistic aspects and requirements of works of art. Fine art conservation is relatively new (only the last 50-60 years, since WWII) whereas restoration has arguably existed since the beginning of the creation of art when artists restored their own or others' works. Restorers tend to have been trained as artisans (often apprenticed to artists) or have learned by experience. This type of learning is a necessary but not sufficient condition to treat works of art in a manner that will reliably ensure their survival.
Conservators attempt to perform the minimum treatment necessary and use as many reversible materials as possible – this is considerably different than a restoration approach. Conservation addresses the work of art not only from the aesthetic but from a materials point of view. The structure of a work of art must be thoroughly understood and preserved in order to preserve the image.

The creative proposal for this painting originated from Ann Getty, who desired a painting of a bookshelf. I designed a composition of two bookshelves side-by-side in a diptych style. Each bookshelf is divided into four parts, exhibiting disciplines of the humanities: theatre, literature, and art. The masks displayed at the top shelves are recognized as a symbol of theatre and drama, and originate from Greek mythology. I sketched the masks to determine the placement of the comedy and tragedy character. Old but precious books line the middle shelves, with each book presenting a title of Getty’s favorite author. The delicate art of blue and white Porcelain Delft pottery is displayed below the literary works.

A Georgian Villa with Greek influences. Dining room murals. Greek room.
This mural of a Georgian Villa with Greek influences was painted in a
dining room of a private residence in Atherton, California. To complete
the room I needed to create the composition on each wall in order to
figure out the placement of each visual element. I then needed to figure
out the color scheme. Color unites the composition of elements of art
and design in harmony. I sketched the mural's original dimensions
directly on the wall, and then painted onto it. The entire experience
was an exercise in building beautiful forms and volumes, enhancing them
with architectural details and molding, and using custom furnishing,
colors and textiles to make the interior of this formal room
approachable and intimate. The clients are of Greek heritage and took
inspiration from the Villas Kerylos which is part of an ancient Greek
villa on the French Riviera near Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. We also looked
at David Adler's wonderful Reed House in Lake Forest, IL, for ideas.
